Dog Fancy was a monthly publication focused on canine enthusiasts, dog owners, and breeders. Launched in 1970, the magazine was once promoted by its publisher, BowTie Inc., as "the world’s most widely read dog magazine." BowTie Inc. also produced Dog World, a related magazine, as well as Cat Fancy, which catered to cat owners.

Based in Irvine, California, the magazine had a reported paid circulation of 202,000 copies as of December 2009, though by 2014, circulation had declined to 149,088.

In August 2008, Dog Fancy introduced a quarterly special edition called Natural Dog, featured as a flip-side section within the main magazine. By late 2014, after Lumina Media acquired the publication, it was announced that Dog Fancy and Cat Fancy would merge with the Dogster and Catster digital brands. This transition led to the launch of alternating bimonthly print issues of Dogster and Catster starting in February 2015. In April 2017, Dogster magazine and its website were acquired by Belvoir Media Group.
